The father of Oscar Carlton was Calvin Albert. As a twiced widowed farmer with 4 lively children, in 1908 Calvin married Ida Ellen Dailey (1883 - 1970), of Crown City, Ohio. They had eight children: Oscar Carlton (1909 - 2000); Print Walter (1911 - 1985); Margaret Marie (19__ - ____); William Worthy (1914 - 1990); Mae Kathryn (1917 - 1994); Woodrow Melvin (1919 - 2000); Pansy Pearl (1921 - 2000); Frederick David (19__ - ____).

Oscar had been the 'man of the house', ever since his Daddy died. As a matter of fact, Calvin had asked Ockie to look after the family & Oc promised he would do so. He hardly even looked at girls until 'the nest' was almost empty (just one was left) of his younger brothers & sisters. Things being this way, he became a lead figure for many & 'jack-of-all-trades' without much choice! So he met his 'to-be' at a later age than most do. The left picture is him at about age 3. The one on the right is him excerpted from where he is shown sitting on his the porch with most of the brothers & sisters still residing 'in the nest'.

Oscar met Devotah Elver Dent (1911 - 1993) at the Judson Baptist Church & they were married on March 17, 1945 at the Preacher Clarie's house in Milton, WVa. They had a girl, Lois Faye (19__). They always resided in WVa. He first worked around doing odd jobs farming and logging. On March 13,1941 he went to work for Union Carbide in the South Charleston Plant where he hired in as day labor, then moved up from 3 years of the janitorial department to transfer to the Blacksmith Shop where he worked as top mechanic until he retired. However, he never lost his love for farming. After Oc & Devotah were married, they bought her home place from her 2 brothers. There they set themselves up a small dairy business. He would milk morning & night. She would take the milk to make butter & buttermilk. They also kept hens so had eggs to sell. She would 'peddle' this out afew days a week plus some customers would come daily to their house for the goods. They enjoyed their work together. Oscar lived his last 57 years in the house at the forks of BillsCreekRoad & TeaysVallyRoad. Both he & Devotah are buried in the Mt.Vernon Baptist Church Cemetary, Hurricane, WVa
